I HATH SOLVED HUMANITY'S BIGGEST PROBLEM

...........Did Elves or Ents come first?

In The Two Towers, Treebeard says that the Ents (talking trees) are older than Elves, but then he says that Elves were the ones who brought the trees to life and taught them to speak.

Whaaaaaaa..................???

Well......

I HATH SOLVED THIS PROBLEM, PEOPLE.

Let's take a little look at history.....

Yavanna (if you actually know who she is we NEED to be friends, pronto) created the trees when Arda (which includes Middle-earth) was just a lifeless waste. She placed them on Arda because she had a love for all things that grow and in order to combat the darkness of Morgoth (predecessor to Sauron in the Dark Lord department). But Yavanna did not make the trees speak or move or anything. She just made them......well......trees. Like ya probably see out your bedroom window.

MANY (and I'm talking thousands and thousands) of years later, the Elves came into existence (at the time Eru had pre-determined).

Those trees Yavanna had planted were still just.....ya know......trees.

But, many, many years later, the Elves (either or both those led by Feanor and Fingolfin and those who abandoned the Great Journey) taught the trees to speak, and move, and think.

THEREFORE.

When Treebeard was saying Ents came into existence before the Elves, he meant that, in his opinion, Ents started being "Ents" when they were very first planted, when they were still just like other trees, NOT when the Elves made them special.

SO......

If you believe that Ents started being Ents when they were planted, even though they weren't extraordinary yet, then you think that Ents came first. (I myself am of this persuasion.) HOWEVER, if you believe that Ents were only Ents once the Elves taught them to speak and such, then you believe it was Elves that came first.

WELL.

Hope that wasn't too confusing for anyone.

If you know who any of those people - Yavanna, Fingolfin, Morgoth, Eru, and Feanor - are, or understood even the slightest part of my solution up above, then comment down below and I will give you this humongous tray of really soft and chocolaty brownies and we will shoot confetti out of cannons and jump around and squeal about Tolkien fan feels and Sons of Feanor crushes. Mine happens to be Maglor. :D

TAKE CARE GUYS AND REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE ALL VERY BEAUTIFUL PICKLES.

Ellie
