A Very Musical Blog Party, Day 1: Your Favorite Musical

So remember that one time I said I wasn't going to post when I was on vacation?

Yeah. Well, then this happened.

AND I COULDN'T NOT.

Idk whose grand idea it was to let me do this but it was definitely a mistake.

Idk if y'all know this, but I quite like musicals. I don't talk about them much on here (although I think I have mentioned Les Miz a couple of times), but I do rather like them. Favorites include:

I S2G IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS YOU NEED TO NOW IT'S SO HILARIOUS.

But I also love Wicked, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, and a whole host of other ones.

So anyway. For the next ten days (I probably won't do all of them, though) there's a musical-related post prompt for you to do on your blog as part of the blog party. Today's is your favorite musical.

This is gonna take a long time so get comfy.

It probably won't take too much brain to guess my favorite musical is

LES MISERABLES.

Note: we are not talking about the movie here. Because that's a whole other rant altogether. Nor the book. Just the musical.

French for "The Miserables". Which kinda sums up the whole thing.

Les Miz, a common nickname for the greatest musical in the world, is about the lives of several people as they intertwine during a street revolution in France during the 1800s. (Note: This did not take place during the French revolution. "BUT ELLIE IT INVOLVES A STREET REVOLUTION IN FRANCE". You think the French Revolution was the only time that ever happened? Hun, no. Do some research.) The main characters are:

1. Jean Valjean

Jean Valjean is a convicted convict, sentenced to the chain gang for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister. (Harsh much?) The musical begins when he's finally let out of the chain gang. Over the course of the musical, he repents for his wrongs and decides to live a good life. This, however, is unknown to

2. Javert

the policeman who is constantly hunting Valjean. When Valjean decided to turn good, he broke parole, and Javert has been on the hunt for him ever since. Javert believes that Jean Valjean is still evil and so is determined to bring him to justice. (One of my personal fave characters tbh.)

3. Fantine

Fantine is a poor young woman. She's unmarried, but got in a relationship with a man who soon left her pregnant. She gave birth to her daughter, Cosette (who will be discussed shortly), and has to work in a factory to earn enough money to feed Cosette (who stays with a nasty (but hilarious) innkeeper and his wife because Fantine doesn't have a good place for her to live). When Cosette is about six, Fantine is thrown out of the factory for refusing the sexual advantages of the manager. Desperate to earn money for Cosette, she becomes a prostitute and is nearly raped* before being rescued by Valjean. She is rushed to a hospital and soon dies, but not before Valjean promises to take care of

4. Cosette

Fantine's illegitimate daughter whom Valjean raises as his own. She is very sweet and daydream-y and knows nothing of her real parentage. When she's around 16, she falls in love with

5. Marius

Marius is a student at university. He and some of his friends are outraged at the tyranny of the French government and plan a rebellion. He falls in love with Cosette, but unbeknownst to him his friend

6. Eponine

also has feelings for him. Eponine is the daughter of that particularly nasty innkeeper I mentioned a while back, but she's not nasty at all. In fact, when Marius asks Eponine to find out who Cosette is, she does it even though she knows that that means she and Marius will likely never be together.

Finally, we have

7. Enjolras (another fave)

The head of the student revolutionaries. Charismatic and passionate, but a bit hasty. Also pretty much the one character I think was portrayed well in the movie.

Although there are really a ton of characters and this only scratches the surface.

Les Miz also has some kick-ass music. My favorites are

1. At the End of the Day

This is sung when the poor are complaining about their lives and how there's never any justice for them.

2. One Day More

This is a stunning mashup at the end of the first act. All the characters sing together and gaaaah it's just so amazing. Just so you know what everyone's talking about, Valjean is deciding to move away because he thinks Javert has discovered where he lives, Marius and Cosette are freaking because they might never see each other again, Eponine is mourning because she knows she's lost Marius to Cosette, Enjolras is rallying the revolutionaries, the nasty innkeeper people are celebrating the inevitable death of the revolutionaries, and Javert (the dude at 2:55, he's in disguise for a mission) is plotting to stop the revolutionaries by infiltrating their ranks (the aforementioned mission.)

Those two songs are both shown nicely in this video, so here:

3. Do You Hear the People Sing?

This is sung when Enjolras and the revolutionaries are rallying the people to their cause.

4. Stars

This is a solo by Javert, when he's swearing he'll hunt Valjean until the end of time and never stop until he finds him. (Zealous much?) Still, it's absolutely gorgeous.

Well, that's all I have to fangirl about for today.

Finally Ellie.

If you read through to here, comment "Enjolras needs to chill on the coffee" and I'll give you a virtual cookie. :)

Do you watch musicals? If so, what's your favorite? Comment below :).

Namarië,
Ellie

*If anyone says she "deserved it" I will personally hurt you.

  1. great wow thanks Ellie I'm totally not sitting here watching all the Olivier Awards Les Mis stuff I can find (Eponine is played by Carrie Hope Fletcher and she's just amazing) and screaming internally because it's bloody brilliant.
I want to go see it so badly, aah it looks so good. I actually understand it now, because my dad went to see the film and he tried to explain it to me but I never understood it :)
