Character Studies #1 - Ydda, the Sarcastic Street Thief

HEY YOUNG BLOODS.

So Morgan @ Studies in Character (an amazing new blog written totally from the POV of her book characters, seriously, go check it out, you'll love it) has started a monthly link-up thing where she provides you with questions to interview your characters! So today, I'll be interviewing Ydda (pronounced YIH-duh) - the sarcastic pickpocket from my high fantasy series, The World of the Four Pillars.

"Ydda turned on a dime, opened her eyes, and looked at him [Talonstone]. Just looked at him, and something about her steely gaze boring into his forehead made him look up. They locked eyes. But each had the other cornered, and taking the other down would require some self-sacrifice - which neither was willing to do. And so through their eyes they reached a truce, and Talonstone went back to his cuticles and Ydda turned her attention once again to Curls. Somehow, her staredown with Talonstone had given her confidence. Maybe not as much as she’d had before - but enough to formulate a really risky, really stupid plan."

Onto the questions!

1. What's your name? Do you have a nickname? Is there any story behind your name or nickname?
Well, my name's Ydda. And no, hun, I don't have a nickname - there's only so much you can do with four letters, three of which are consonants.

2. How old do you look? Is that your real age? How old are you, actually?
Darling, you may not know how to count, but that's three questions. Not one.
But to answer - I'm a master of disguise, of charades and masks and theatre. I can make myself look anywhere from fourteen to thirty in minutes. However, in actuality I am 24.

3. What's your gender?
Female, disappointingly. I've always thought it would be easier in this world if I was male.

4. What's your eye color? How easy is it to tell your eye color from a distance?
Brown, love. Just plain brown. And oh, I don't know - from a distance it's certainly obvious that I don't have any particularly striking eye color.

5. What's your ethnicity? Does anyone ever get it wrong?
Cavanorian through and through. And no - though I don't have fair hair and green/blue eyes like most people around here, I've been told by travelers that I have an unmistakably thick accent.

6. What's your build? How tall are you? Are you strong?
Hah, no. I generally dislike my appearance, but my lack of height is the worst of it. I'm about five feet, although I am big-boned and fairly broad, at least for my height.

7. What's your foremost physical trait - the first thing someone will notice about your appearance?
Ugh. The thing I hate second-most about my appearance - my thrice-damned hair. It's all bright and red, and I wouldn't mind that except it's disgustingly curly and sticks out every which way.

8. What's your favorite outfit, or what do you wear the most? Why is this your favorite?
Favorite? Hun, I live day-to-day, meal-to-meal. I don't have the money nor the circumstances to care about my outfits. But the one I wear most is straight-up, practical - loose-fitting white blouse, brown trousers, thick boots, and a long brown coat. No matter if it's summer or winter - it's always cold in Cavanor.

9. How do you usually introduce yourself to new people?
I prefer to introduce myself to whatever's in their pockets, actually.

Bonus - What would you do if you were a pirate?
I think I would be seasick for a while. I have never gotten on a boat in my life, and I don't really intend to. But after that - I'd set right away to looting and burning.

Well, that's all for today. <3 Have a lovely evening, and remember that you are all very beautiful pickles.

Namarië,
Ellie

  1. Nice to meet you, Ydda! It's so cool to meet an actual pickpocket! (I live in a world where nobody actually keeps valuable things in their pockets anymore. So stealing is way more complicated.)

Also, thanks for the shoutout to our blog!

    1. *flamboyantly bows* Thank you, love, although it's not so glamorous an existence as it appears.
Gods, what do they do? Carry around giant satchels all the time? Seems horribly inconvenient, if you ask me.

  2. Sarcasm and thieves. Two of my favourite things in a character. What genre is your book? Fantasy? Also, she has a really interesting name. What is the correct way to pronounce it? (I have an idea of what it sounds like, but I'm interested to know the correct pronunciation.)

    1. Ahh thank you! Me too :) Yup, fantasy.
Well, //technically//, by the proper grammar rules of the Cavanorian language, it //should// be pronounced EEE-duh. But Ydda was brought up in an extremely poor, uneducated family and is just learning to read and write, and she and her family have always pronounced it YIH-duh. So you can really pronounce it either way, although she prefers the latter. :)
