Beautiful People #6: Laurel, the Lesbian Witch

Hey, young bloods! Today I'm linking up with Cait and Sky to bring you Beautiful People, where you answer questions about your book characters in an effort to get to know them better. This month, I'll be introducing you to my dearest witch Laurel from my WIP The Sisters of Sinister Row.

1. Give a brief overview of their looks. (Include a photo if you want!)
Laurel is very classically beautiful, with large eyes, clear skin, and very long brown hair (so long and thick she often appears to be drowning in it). She likes bohemian fashion and often wears short shorts, kimonos, and her trademark flower crowns. However, as Shakespeare would say, "Though she be but little, she is fierce!"

2. Share a snippet that involves a description of their appearance.
(I'm going to slightly bend the definition of description. XD)

"Laurel had always been considered a regular beauty by those of the opposite gender, but from the beginning she'd been far more interested in girls."

3. What is the first thing people might notice about them?
Her flower crowns, probably. She makes them to destress and owns ones in all different colors of the rainbow.

4. What are their unique features? (Ex: freckles, big ears, birthmarks, scars, etc.)
Much to her chagrin, Laurel's entire body is sprinkled with freckles. Usually, the only visible ones are a few across her nose and on her legs, but there are many dotted around the rest of her body.
She also has a scar on her left side from an altercation with evil witches years ago.

5. How tall are they? What is their build? (Ex: stocky, slender, petite, etc.)
Laurel is extremely petite and extremely short. She's perhaps 5'2 (still taller than me, though) and, almost no matter what she eats, extremely slim because of her fast metabolism. (Emmeline and Octavia, the other two witches in her coven, are constantly yelling at her to quit stuffing her body with junk food. She's particularly fond of kettle chips.)

6. What is their posture like? How do they carry themselves?
It depends on the situation. If she's feeling confident, Laurel's catlike and graceful and stands as tall as she can. If not, she cowers and hunches over, even while walking.

"That was the infuriating thing about Laurel. Sometimes you got a shy, scared waif wearing flower crowns, sometimes a beautifully devious Egyptian goddess. You never knew what was coming until it hit you over the head."

7. Your character has been seen on a "lazy day" (free from usual routine/expectations): what are they wearing and how do they look?
Laurel has very little down time, as the head of her coven, Emmeline, is constantly pushing everyone to their limits. However, if she does have a few hours to herself she'll usually put on a fluffy robe and facial mask and treat herself to a mini spa day.

8. Do they wear glasses, accessories, or jewelry on a regular basis? Do they have any article of clothing or accessory that could be considered their trademark?
Yes! Laurel's a big fan of accessories; she wears a lot of feather and hemp jewelry. Flower crowns would be her trademark, definitely.

9. Have they ever been bullied or shamed because of their looks? Explain!
Not really bullied or shamed, more relentlessly pursued. She was delighted when she learned how to turn annoying suitors into slugs.
(Now she has a collection of slugs she keeps in her room, occasionally feeding some to Emmeline's bird if the mood strikes her.)

10. Are they happy with how they look? If they could change anything about their appearance, what would it be?
Laurel's moderately happy with how she looks. She would do away with the freckles, definitely (though not the scar - she wears it like a trophy). She'd also probably change her eyes from their boring brown color to a bright green or blue - but she'd keep the brown hair, as it makes her look more like a forest nymph.
(Her ultimate dream is to be compared to a forest nymph.)

How are your WIPs doing? Are you participating in BP? (Hint: you should.) I hoped you all enjoyed getting to know Laurel, and have a lovely rest of your day. <3

  2. Her sense of style is making me really jealous. GAH I really like Laurel! She and Zaphrim are so far my favourite characters of yours (and on the whole suitor-slug spells, who WOULDN'T get the urge to do that from time to time?)

  4. Turning suitors into slugs and feeding them to pet birds = pure gold. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to find a girl alive who didn't wish she could do that.

ALSO, CAN I JUST SAY THAT LAUREL IS ONE OF MY NAME CRUSHES? It's so pretty and delicate but it would also fit well with a tomboy. Gosh, I love it. I love most nature/plant names, really. Like, my future children better watch out or they're going to be named something like Sparrow and Pine.

  5. This witch sounds like she would get along with me very well IRL. And let me tell you, Laurel feels REAL, and that's hard to accomplish when writing. She feels like a real person and throughout this whole post I was just like BROOO HIGH FIVE ME MADAM I AM SO LIKE YOU. Laurel's style of clothing and how she deals with suitors is so stereotypical but amusing and charming. SO BASICALLY, I CONGRATULATE YOU ON WRITING A GORGEOUS CHARACTER.

Honestly, you've done a superb job on this blog. The design is gorgeous and you sound like a wonderful person. This post was the only BP memorable post that was on the linkup and I literally had it opened while writing my own :D
