10 Thoughts While Reading Durarara

Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan: Home of the infamous color gangs. Irish fae. Underground doctors. A demonic sword. A particularly manipulative information broker. A mysterious gang without a color, a gang that can blend in anywhere at anytime. Their stories come together and intertwine in Durarara!!, an anime + manga + light novel series I've recently fallen head-over-heels in love with.  Recently, I checked out the first three installments of the light novel series from my library, and I've been having loTS OF FEELINGS ABOUT MY CHILDREN AND THEIR ESCAPADES. And hence, I harness my blog as a tool to rant about some thoughts I had while reading Durarara.

1. "I hope to die under a pile of books." - Erika Karisawa. SAME, GIRL, SAME.

2. MIKADO RYUUGAMINE. TOO SMOL. TOO GOOD. TOO PURE.

3. Izaya Orihara, the most dangerous man in Tokyo, unironically saying "lol" is my new aesthetic.

4. Izaya: Vampires don't exist.
Izaya: But demon swords that possess and control people definitely do.
Izaya: Clearly, I have Logic.

5. "I really only know half of what goes on in this city." I CALL BULLSHIT, MASAOMI KIDA.

6. That moment when you're pretending to know nothing about the gang you accidentally started and are talking about it to the person who helped you start it (who is also pretending to know nothing about it) but quickly abandoned you and neither of you knows the other is a co-founder because you're both in disguise.

7. MIKADO IS SO MUCH SASSIER THAN THE ANIME GIVES HIM CREDIT FOR LIKE DAMN BOY, FRICKING WRECKING MASAOMI EVERY TWO SECONDS. 100/10 ON THE SASS SCALE. FRICK, SON.

8. I'm 75% sure Kadota is the only one in this series who has his shit together in the least.

9. Okay, but can Shinra's father just, like, not exist?

10. Better in the anime: Masaomi and Shinra
Better in the novels: Anri and Izaya

  1. i've never watched any anime, and tbh I'm kind of intimidated by it??? it seems like there's so much of it, and i have absolutely no clue where i would ever start. O_O

    1. I KNOW THE FEELING. I would recommend starting with Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji - it's about a 12 year old Earl in Victorian England who sells his soul to a demon. The demon (Sebastian) must then help the earl (Ciel) get revenge on those who killed his parents and soiled his family name, and once that is done Sebastian may eat Ciel's soul. I think you'd like it; they're SO VERY PRECIOUS and there is ALL the moral grey-ness.

KAZ AND WYLAN AND NOAH AHHHH.

      Well thank you!!

    1. YES YOU MUST. The anime is also quite good, although I can't vouch for the manga.

  3. oh my gosh this made me laugh so hard. I love Durarara with a passion (although I tend to forget about it when it comes to my favourite animes? I am ashamed??) but I've never read the light novels and I really should. it's just such an amazing combination of literally EVERYTHING; how could you not love something combines Irish lore and color gangs? I love Izaya so much, but in reality I would probably want to rip his head off. and I inwardly screamed at number 5. TOO TRUE.

thanks for stopping by my blog, and it's good to meet another anime/manga/light novel fan!

    1. YESSS AHHH. It's definitely my favorite anime/light novel, I'd say. IKR?! And you get a lot of character depth and details in the novels that it's hard to pick out in the anime; for example, you get a much larger insight into Izaya's character and why he acts the way he does.

I'm excited to finally meet one as well!

  4. I loved DRRR!! so much tbh! I went and read up on the novels, the whole Hollywood and Veronika and our favorite info broker getting stabbed and stuff, wow it's a ride! Seriously, this novel makes it look like Tokyo never gets a break and amazingly, it's true? Like, the anime and everything just make a city really pop to life, everything is so dynamic and amazing. I love it :P
