The Smashing & Dashing Character Awards

Masaomi - Noah - Ciel - Ronan - Celty - Andrew
WELL I'M ONLY 10,000 YEARS LATE TO THIS. However,

So fight me.

Anyway - what are these "smashing and dashing" character awards, you might ask? They're some awesome awards (created by Cait @ Paper Fury) you give to the very best characters from books you read in 2016! (And since I'm super late to this, I'm counting January 2017 as well.) Basically, character Oscars. Fun, right?

(Note: since there are a ton of award categories, I'm going to keep this post at a decent length by taking out categories where I'd have repetitive answers or don't really have a good answer. And, as always, the books that have reviews are linked.)

Most Pure and Precious Animal Companion

He's neither pure nor precious, but I can't get a question about animal companions and not mention Hal from Paper Crowns by Mirriam Neal. Sometimes he's a snuggly blue kitten, sometimes he's a snarky-as-hell warrior fae. How awesome is that?!

(ALSO, I FIRMLY MAINTAIN THAT HE SHOULD HAVE ENDED UP WITH AZRAEL AND NOT THAT CERTAIN VERY ANNOYING CHARACTER HE DECIDED TO GET WITH. MAKE GOOD CHOICES, PAL. STOP TORTURING ME.)

Fiercest Fighter

Definitely Celty from Durarara!! by Ryohgo Narita. She's a headless horsewoman who acts as a smuggler in Tokyo, and she can CONTROL SHADOWS. How cool is that??

(And yes, I know technically Shizuo is a stronger fighter than she is. BUT I JUST LOVE HER SO MUCH AND I COULDN'T NOT MENTION HER, OKAY?)

Most Amazing Sidekick

NOAH CZERNY (from The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater). WHAT A BEAN. Now, I admit, he doesn't really do much in the sidekick department - or any department - BUT HE'S STILL AMAZING, OKAY?

One You're Surprised You Loved

Definitely Root from Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. I hated him at first, but he rapidly grew on me as the novel progressed. Poor baby just wants to protect his fellow fae and shoot at other people. I relate to both of those things.

Best Sassmaster

This is a super tough one; there are so many to pick from! My first instinct is definitely Baz from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, but he's going to be mentioned later in this post, so let's put him aside for now. In absence of Baz, I'm going to give this award to Ronan Lynch from The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

Best Anti-Hero

Right, so I know possibly every other person in existence will say Kaz or Locke or Ronan for this question, BUT I PRESENT TO YOU THE ANTI-HERO THAT WILL OUT-ANTI-HERO ALL OF THEM COMBINED.

CIEL PHANTOMHIVE.

  • So this smol smiley and innocent 12-year-old is kidnapped after his house burns down and he watches his parents die
  • Is tortured relentlessly until he's like "fuck this" and summons a demon
  • Makes a contract with the aforementioned demon that the demon will help him get revenge on whoever killed his parents (cause the torturers are different people)
  • But after that happens, demon counters, I get to eat your soul
  • Ciel's like "lmao ok I don't care"
  • He gets a fucking demon symbol branded on his eye and is like "ouch, I guess"
  • So now they police the criminal underworld of England together being EVIL and BURNING INNOCENT PEOPLE ALIVE AS COLLATERAL DAMAGE THEY DON'T GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT and their mansion is basically a death maze where the demon tortures anyone who slights Ciel and it's great
  • There's this one point where the demon's like "Oh yeah Ciel's basically as evil as I am" like FRICK SON, THAT'S QUITE A TURNAROUND FROM BEFORE.
Before and after

Toot Toot Best Ship of Them All

THIS ONE'S SUPER HARD, but I think I'll have to go with Simon Snow + Baz from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell! I could probably read a 500-page volume on them puttering around their apartment cleaning, tbh.

The Most in Need of Protection

Hands down, Patroclus from The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. I can not think of a smoller character.

Best Little Royal

Khalid from The Wrath & the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh! He could SO easily have been a Mary-Sue, but Ms. Ahdieh wrote him brilliantly. You feel for him a TON, and he's somehow relatable?? Idk how I, a fifteen year old girl from Cornland, USA (aka Iowa), empathize with a cursed king of a fantasy realm, BUT I DO, OKAY?

Very Surprised You're Still Alive

RHOSHAMANDES FROM PRINCE LESTAT AND THE REALMS OF ATLANTIS BY ANNE RICE. There was a solid half a book there where I was fairly certain he was going to die. I mean, to be fair, dude, you did try to assassinate the Prince of the Vampires. Maybe not the best survival strategy? But I'm so happy he and Benedict survived and are happy beans now because they're honestly some of my favorite characters.

Best at Horrible Decision Making

UH. MASAOMI. FREN. WE NEED TO HAVE A TALK ABOUT WHAT GOOD DECISIONS CONSIST OF, BUDDY.*

*Specifically, they consist of not trying to start gangs as a 12-year-old, not going back to that gang after you've finally gotten free, nOT ABANDONING YOUR FRIENDS, and never listening to Izaya Orihara. This has been an Ellie Lecture in Common Sense.

Want to Read More About You

Definitely Andrew from The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic. I MUST KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS BACKSTORY, OKAY? AND HIS THOUGHTS. AND EVERYTHING. The fact that I won't be getting the next All for the Game book until my birthday is a permanent, certified Source of Agony.
