Current TBR Pile #16
SO MANY SCHWAB BOOKS, SO LITTLE TIME. All of her works look so good, and Vicious is no exception. Now I just have to, you know, read one.
Star-Crossed by Barbara Dee
DO I DETECT LGBT+ REPRESENTATION IN A MIDDLE GRADE BOOK? HELL YEAH. I already relate majorly to Mattie, as (like her) eighth grade was the grade when I became at peace with my sexuality. Plus, the author's (not straight) daughter posted on Tumblr about how her mom consulted with her extensively while writing this book. And I just
ACCURATE. LGBT+. REPRESENTATION. FOR. MIDDLE. SCHOOLERS.
This is the highlight of my year, y'all.
Bone Gap by Ruby Laura
THIS. LOOKS. SO. GORGEOUSLY. WRITTEN. I CAN'T. Plus, the cover has a bee, and I love bees.
Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi
Furthermore looks like such a fun, whimsical fairytale! There's always room on my shelf for another one of those.
Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin
This story, chronicling the trials and travails of several roommates in San Francisco (a city I love), was a rec from my mom. We usually don't have the same taste in books, but this one looks pretty good!
Trick by Natalia Jaster
THAT COVER, Y'ALL. And the main character, ohmygoodness.....and LGBTQ+ representation in a fantasy world.....I'm really excited to download this.
(By the way, Bunny @ The Shy Books did an amazing interview with Natalia Jaster! Bunny is so sweet, and the interview is super interesting (although it does contain spoilers for the book), so y'all should definitely check it out.)

ReplyDeleteHaha I feel that! I think it's about rivaling superheroes, and I really hope it includes gay.

VICIOUS. OMFG YOU NEED TO READ IT. victor vale is the the best mc I've read about since the foxhole court and I have so much love for him and his entire ragtag crew. ❤️
ReplyDeleteLGBTQ+ representation in a middle grade book might just be the most exciting thing I've heard all year. Also, that cover is just adorable.
Currently on my tbr pile is at the edge of the universe by Shaun David Hutchinson. I've loved all of his other books and I'm waaaaay too excited to get to it.
Another lovely post, Ellie!!

WELL ADI HAS REC'D IT SO NOW I MUST READ IT. Seriously, dear, your recs are always wonderful. I just finished The Raven King by Nora Sakavic, and I'm fairly certain my heart was ripped out.
DeleteIKR?! The author actually vetoed the original cover design because the publishers drew Mattie (the girl on the left) with short hair; she wanted Mattie to have longer hair so everyone who saw the cover would know it was an LGBT+ book.
I'll be excited to hear your thoughts!
Thank you, darling! :)

My TBR is exploding at the moment! I have Bone Gap on there as well - I've borrowed Vicious so many times from the library, but have never got around to it. I hope you enjoy all these books. :) I currently have a few library books that are due to be returned soon, so focussing on them I have Bone Gap, The Unexpected Everything and Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson, The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh, and The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis on my tbr next.
ReplyDeleteMine as well! The Wrath and the Dawn is awesome; I hope you enjoy it! Best of luck with your tbr :)

IKR! I'm super excited to finally see it. I hope it'll help other kids (especially girls) who were where I was a few years ago accept and figure out their sexuality. I really could have used a book like it :)

Vicious is absolutely amazing! I'm so happy there's going to be a sequel! I've been dying to read Furthermore; I loved Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me series!
ReplyDeleteThis will be my first Tahereh Mafi book! I'm quite excited for her upcoming novel, the one about the Persian girl and the dead bodies. :)

VICIOUS AND BONE GAP ARE BOTH TWO OF MY ULTIMATE FAVOURITE BOOKS OF THE UNIVERSE. 😍😍😍 *flails wildly* I really hope you like them!! SQUEEEE. I don't even know what to do with myself anymore because I just finished A Conjuring Of Light and now every other book seems bleh. haha. 😂 But I AM reading Gemina on audio and I do love it! I also hopefully will be reading Stranger Game soon or A Quiet Kind of Thunder or Caraval...or...like...everything.😂 I'm so behind on reading after taking 2 weeks off omg.
ReplyDeleteOh noooo, that's no good! I need to get into the Illuminae books.... I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Caraval! Oh my goodness, I absolutely CAN NOT imagine taking two weeks off from reading....*shudders*

I just started Trick, and I have high hopes!

I started Furthermore awhile back because it looked so intriguing. But for some reason I couldn't get into it. The cover is gorgeous, though.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a style of writing that only works for some people. I agree! It's so fun :)

I've read Furthermore and I loved it so much! The author's take on magic was so different than from other books I've read. I especially like the voice of the narrator. The sun rains and the people eat flowers in this universe. It's very unique. It's not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it! :)
