Beautiful People #9: Ari, the Steampunk Prince

by - 8:55 PM

Hey, young bloods! I'm finally back in the blogosphere after disappearing off the face of the Internet in order to study for/compete in Academic Decathlon. I really enjoyed it, and I'm happy with how I did (I broke the school record and placed in three categories), but it's so awesome to be back! I so missed getting to read and write posts :(

Today, I'm linking up with Cait and Sky to bring you Beautiful People, a linkup where you answer questions about your book characters! This month, I'm introducing the prince of my steampunk nation from Karissa Goldlock's Guide to (Almost) Utterly Everything - Ari Wickworth.

1. What's their favorite book/movie/play etc?
I don't know if Ari could pick a favorite book - he's read so many, he'd probably list six or seven. But he's quite fond of long + rambling histories and cute + feelsy animal short stories.

2. Is there anything they regret doing?
Plenty. He regrets not being more open-minded about people who are different, he regrets not being open about his emotions, and he regrets being too passive and complacent to detect when his mother was being abused.

3. If they were sick or wounded, who would take care of them and how?
Jasper, the Dwarven scholar who's like a second father to Ari, would grumble about germs and scold Ari for getting exposed to them, but he'd take care of Ari like his life depended on it. Aiwyn, Ari's Elvish friend (*cough* or perhaps more than friend, if they ever get their crap together *cough*), would coddle him and tell him stories to get his mind off the sickness.

4. Is there an object they can't bear to part with, and why?
She's not an object, but Iphigenia is the cat Ari adopts while in Faelind, the fae nation Aiwyn's from. All the house pets in Aerofell, the steampunk land, are mechanical - none are actually living, although they have high artificial intelligence. But Iphigenia is Ari's first-ever real, living pet. He's shocked by how preferable he finds her to his mechanical cats back home; it feels like she really cares about him, and her spontaneity and quirks aren't pre-programmed.

5. What are 5 ways to win their heart (or friendship)?

  1. Be a nerd. Love books. Discuss poetry with him, and write snarky reviews to anonymously send to the newspapers.
  2. Be a lover of cats (mechanical or living).
  3. Care about him because he's Ari, not because he's Prince Adriel Lucian Marius Wickworth of Aerofell. Love him because of his soul, not his station.
  4. Be adventurous. Be willing to make blanket forts when neither of you can sleep; be willing to take spontaneous trips to the Palace roof to sit and watch the stars.
  5. Be someone from whom be can learn. Be someone who can teach him tolerance (like Karissa) or love (like Aiwyn) or loyalty (like Jasper). Help him grow, and let him care for you in return.

6. Describe a typical outfit from top to bottom.
Ari's the prince of a steampunk nation, and his outfits definitely reflect that. Typically, he'll start with a top hat with a huge buckle and little gears and clock-hands sticking out and decorating the crown. He rarely uses goggles, being royalty, but he straps highly decorative ones onto his hat as a symbol of being "one with the people". He'll have a white shirt, black vest dripping with pocket watches, red tie, long + fitted red coat, and tall + sturdy black boots. He wears fine black gloves and walks with an elaborately decorated gold cane, although he doesn't need it. He wears several watches.

7. What's their favorite type of weather?
Dry and cool (but not too cold) - cloudy, but not chilly.

8. What's the worst fight they've ever been in?
Aerofell and Faelind have always been at war. There's a ton of prejudice between the two countries, and although Ari is won over by the fae in the end, he sometimes accidentally reverts to his old ways. When he said he couldn't trust Karissa because she was a fae, Aiwyn got very angry at him. They were in a half-fighting state for weeks after that, Ari wanting to apologize but thinking he'd be denied forgiveness (so what would be the point?) and Aiwyn thinking Ari was just like all the other Aerofelli who would as soon as kill a fae as set eyes on them.

9. What names or nicknames have they been called throughout his life?
Ari is actually a nickname (and the name Ari prefers), as his full name is Adriel. The vast majority of people (including the public, the peerage, and his father) refer to him that way, but his mother calls him Ari in private. Jasper tends to address him (in a scolding tone) as "Adriel Lucian Marius!" (his first + middle names) or (in a gentle tone) as vamir, Aerofelli for "little bird". Those he's familiar with, like Aiwyn, call him Ari.

10. What makes their heart feel alive?
Diving headfirst into a new book. Soaring high above the clouds in an airship. Dancing in the night under streetlightsPlants. Cats. Endless skies. Watches ticking perfectly. An elf with gold hair, long fingers, and glass eyes.

Well, that's Ari! I hope you enjoyed reading about him :) Let's chat! What's your favorite book? Favorite movie? And did you do BP this month? Comment below, and have a lovely day. <3

  1. Steampunk, blanket forts - I love it! (my characters have a fondness for blanket forts too). I like the detail of Ari preferring the real cat over the mechanical cat - and I love your names, and the nicknames vamir/little bird. Did you make up a language for your story?! *impressed*

    1. Thank you! (All sane people do.) I didn't make up a language, but I did make up words when I needed them and figured out some basic grammar rules so I could use them consistently and correctly in the snapshots of the language I included. :)

  2. Ahhhhhh your story sounds so amazing! I already love Ari! (And his cat, but I can't spell its name, so...) XD Great post!

    1. Thank you! (Neither can anyone except Ari, don't worry.)

  3. Okay, first of all--THESE PICTURES WERE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS???? Wherever did you find them? (Please tell me you didn't take them yourself, because I shall feel inferior for a million and one years)

Also, Ari sounds like such a wonderfully complex character. His love of cats and books totally threw me for a loop, and I totally fell in love with him while reading this. Actually, all of your characters sound absolutely adorable and amazing, and I'd like to crawl into this world and live there for a bit, please...

    1. I definitely didn't take them, haha. They're from Pinterest and Google Images XD

  4. Awesome answers! Ari sounds awesome :) And, gosh, I can just imagine he and Aiwyn dancing under those streetlights in the dead of the night... *wheezes and ships it despite like only two lines saying it MIGHT be a POSSIBLE ship IF they ever get their crap together*

    1. Thank you! (small spoiler: they do, by the end of the book, get their everloving crap together)

  5. Ari sounds so cool, love his style and the fact that he's a cat man :-) Your fictional world sounds amazing, I can't wait to read more about it! x

I obviously am enthralled in the world you've created! How cool! And Ari sounds like a fabulous prince character. I definitely have a weakness for those...
