Standalone Sunday #2

Hey, young bloods! Created by the lovely Megan @ Bookslayer Reads, Standalone Sunday is a link-up in which you talk about your favorite standalone books. So, sans further ado, let's discuss

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything—instead, they “check out” large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele’s behavior, seeking help from his variously talented friends. But when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore’s secrets extend far beyond its walls.

My Thoughts

Okay, first of all, the cover glows in the dark. How cool is that?!

Second of all - Mr. Penumbra is a book I haven't talked about a lot on here, but it's definitely been one of my favorite 2017 reads thus far. Like The Martian, it was a Christmas gift I thought I'd hate but ended up loving. Not only is the writing witty, nerdy, and extremely compelling; the characters are, too. Kat is enchantingly brilliant, Neil Shaw (dungeon master) is hilarious, Clay is sharply real, and Ajax Penumbra himself is all that and so much. more. This fast-paced and gripping read is perfect for lovers of either The Da Vinci Code or the magical aura all old bookstores seem to have. <3

  1. *crashes through door* dID SOMEBODY SAY GLOW IN THE DARK COVER. I was already intrigued by the book itself, but oh boy I think that sealed the deal. Sometimes I just feel like if a publisher puts *that* much work into a unique cover/design aspect, then I mean, certainly the book has to be at least halfway decent??
and can I just take a second to express my love for books that are ABOUT BOOKS. there is honestly nothing more perfect.
another lovely post ellie!! I always adore hearing people's less talked about recommendations. ^-^
