6 Awesome Back-to-School Book Recs

Hey, guys! Today, I'm teaming up with The Broke and the Bookish to bring you Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly bookish link-up. School is starting soon for most of us, which usually means less time to read. With that in mind, I’m coming to you today with six books perfect for reading as we go back to school. These picks are all fairly quick yet engaging, which makes them easier to get through in the weeks where we’re buried in homework.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Those who follow my strange ramblings closely might be surprised at this rec. I’m not known for liking the first book in the Raven Cycle. However, most people love it, so the chances are that you will as well. It’s a short, well-written novel that paves the way for some awesome books later in the series. With the prominence of Aglionby Academy in the plot, it also has some pretty nice school vibes.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valante

This fast but beautiful escapist read is a must for those who like The Wizard of Oz. Its whimsical, fantastical vibes are perfect for escaping the mental drudgery of piles of homework and papers. Saturday, El, and the Green Wind are all marvelous characters, and the plot has some unexpected twists!

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

For those who like middle-grade, I can’t recommend Artemis Fowl enough. I’ve been binging the series lately and am constantly surprised by the ingenuity, humor, and thrills that saturate the books. Artemis Fowl is truly an unforgettable character, and his stories and escapades are like that as well.

The Thief Who Pulled on Trouble’s Braids by Michael McClung

This fantasy heist story about an antihero thief is sure to be loved by fans of Six of Crows and The Lies of Locke Lamora. Amra Thetys is a resourceful and practical heroine, and Holgren the mage is an incredible supporting character. AND THERE’S AN ADORABLE DOG, GUYS.

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

For fans of adult books and/or thrillers, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore is a necessity for your backpack this fall. This quirky, fast-paced, nail-biting read follows the nerdy, sarcastic night clerk at a 24-hour bookstore as he delves into the mystery of the bookstore’s mysterious customers and the force guiding them.

The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

Ah, The Foxhole Court. Also known as the poster child for not judging a book by its cover. For lovers of gritty YA, this is a total must. The twisting, dangerous plot and characters’ secrets and backstories will keep you turning the pages until 3am.

Let’s chat! Have you read any of my recs? What did you think of them? What reads do you recommend for the start of the school year? What books – required or not – will you be reading come the start of the school year? I’ll still be trudging through The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. And if you're doing TTT, link below! Comment below, and have an awesome day!

  1. I've heard SO many things about 'Raven Boys' and Maggie's books in general. She seems to be a popular YA author though I've not taken the time to read any of her books. Perhaps someday I will... until then, I'll simply keep working on my already large (and growing) TBR. :)

  2. I've only recently read The Raven Boys, but reading the sequels next month - Sequel September, yay! Even though I wasn't overly impressed with it, I'm looking forward to finding out whether the rest of the series is better.

Artemis Fowl... Have heard about it, but have never picked it up. Really should do that, shouldn't I? If only my TBR wasn't that out of control, haha.
