My Favorite Character I've Ever Created: The Language of Worlds #1

YA GIRL'S BACK WITH ANOTHER WRITING LINKUP. I will n e v e r tire of talking about myself, okay? It's just an indisputable fact at this point.

Liv @ Liv K. Fisher recently created a character-based linkup for writers of speculative Christian fiction and other genres. that's me, in case you couldn't tell. I'm "other genres." I just started a new WIP that returns to the universe of some of my oldest characters, so I've been rediscovering a lot of characters I haven't written in a while. Plus, it has come to my attention that I haven't done a post yet about one of my very favorite characters I have ever created ever, the assassin Xavius Blackgrail. So this seems like the prime opportunity to introduce him to you all, yes? Yes.

Without further ado, let's dive in.

1. What does your character fear the most? His secret identity being uncovered, for sure. You see, Xavius Blackgrail isn't currently running around as Xavius Blackgrail. He's posing as another person (I'm being purposefully vague here. No spoilers! I know, you hate me.) to try to start a new life as a good person.

2. How would they handle it if they were to face their fear? Ooh, this actually happens about halfway through one of the books. The Prince of Cavanor, Linus, discovers who Xavius really is and presents him with an ultimatum: either work for Linus as a personal assassin/spy, or have his true identity as Xavius Blackgrail revealed to the world. Xavius, uh . . .

. . . doesn't handle it great.

3. Do they want to get married? Why or why not? Ehhh. He's not against it, but he has no particular desire for it. He's just not feeling it, you know?

4. What is their love language (i.e. words of affirmation, physical touch, gifts, quality time, or acts of service)? Physical touch, for sure. It doesn't take getting married for him to figure this out.

5. On a scale from 1 (messy) to 5 (organized), how do they rate? A solid 6. Xavius Blackgrail? Unorganized? The idea is simply preposterous.

6. How do they feel about debates/disagreements? He's down.

7. What do they bring to battle (figuratively or literally)? Xavius used to be a master of combat, obviously, combing amazing sword skills with impeccable martial arts. But then he had a work-related accident (he fell out of a six-story window), and now he has a permanent limp. He can still fight well, but he's nowhere near his old self.

8. What's their favorite thing to eat for breakfast? He appreciates some good smoked salmon, a classic Cavanorian breakfast.

9. How do they treat themselves after a long day? Reading, mostly. He's always been a huge book lover. And some hot tea, since it's always cold in Cavanor.

10. What do you most want readers to glean from this story? Ooh, yikes. Death of the Skies as a whole has a lot going on, but here's the message I'd pull from Xavius's specific storyline: Don't be afraid to change, and don't run away from your past. Only when you truly accept it can you be at peace with your present and your future.

Some Xavius sorts of songs (this isn't part of the linkup but I love character playlists so we're doing it anyway): "Oh, Calamity" by All Time Low | "King of the Clouds" by Panic! at the Disco | "Say Amen (Saturday Night)" by Panic! at the Disco | "I Found" by Amber Run | "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds | "Make This Leap" by The Hunts

Thank you again to Liv for creating + hosting this awesome linkup! Talk to me, y'all: Who's your favorite of your characters? Tell me some stuff about them! What messages do you want people to get from your work? Comment below, and have a fabulous day <3
