The Ultimate Halloween Book Tag

by - 3:58 PM

THE FIRST TAG SINCE THE RESURRECTION. (yes, that's what I'm calling my return from the dead now.) And honestly, I'm surprised it's taken this long. I love me a good tag.

This was stolen with love from Kelly @ Kelly's Rambles and created by Anthony @ Keep Reading Forward. *rubs hands* I think that dispenses with all the necessary introductions and acknowledgements, so let's dive in!

A Magical Character or Book

It's always a good day when Granny Weatherwax, the most iconic character in Terry Pratchett's amazing Discworld series, is in town. Those are some of my favorite books involving her. Here are some of my favorite moments:

She strode across the moors as if distance was a personal insult.

Granny’s implicit belief that everything should get out of her way extended to other witches, very tall trees and, on occasion, mountains.

Many people could say things in a cutting way. But Granny could listen in a cutting way. She could make something sound stupid just by hearing it.

"When you break rules, break 'em good and hard."

The Perfect Book to Read at Night

Look . . . I don't believe in ghosts, demons, or anything of that ilk. But this book still spooked me because it's so very creepy and witchy.

A Book That Truly Shocked You

Um yeah okay we're going to go with this one?? Because for hundreds of pages across multiple books we've been told that this one guy is the Dark Lord, and then it turns out he isn't the Dark Lord at all. RJ sent us on a goose chase that took three books. Three!! Books!!

The Devil
A Dark, Evil Character

For this one, I think I'm going with Claudia. Her progression from innocent to evil is chilling and perfectly written, and her final incarnation in Merrick is truly horrifying.

Grim Reaper
A Character That Never Should Have Died

Kell [character name in white; highlight to view it] was the only character I really liked and they DIED. They're DEAD. They're GONE, y'all. And what for? To show the urgency of the situation? To get Rigan + Corran feeling vengeful? BOTH THOSE THINGS WERE ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED WITH THE 100 OTHER DEATHS IN THE SERIES, THANK YOU.

A Book That Made You "Hungry" For More

Hi hello if you haven't read Nora Sakavic's incredible All for the Game trilogy yet WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE. Nothing good, I'm sure.

I downloaded The Raven King, read it, and immediately downloaded The King's Men and read them back to back. The first book in the trilogy is good, but the second and third (TRK + TKM) absolutely MAKE it. God bless Nora Sakavic. And go read her books.

A Character You Would Protect At All Costs

I'm not sure if this is the best answer, but Reagan just read this book so he's been on my mind: Francis Abernathy, from Donna Tartt's utter masterpiece The Secret History. Runners-up: Armand + Louis from The Vampire Chronicles and Faramir from LOTR.

A Book That Still Haunts You

K I already mentioned All for the Game, so I'm going to go with a different answer for this one. Probably The Lord of the Rings and all accompanying Middle-Earth books,

A Character You Have a Bone to Pick With

Uh yeah Fred Van Ackerman can go die in a hole.

Like this sounds harsh but the man outed one of his colleagues for political gain, then tormented him so badly about it he committed suicide. A hole is better than he deserves.

A Book You Would Preserve Throughout Time

OBVIOUSLY. The message is a timeless one people from all ages should learn from.

I think that's about it! I've been super busy with tech week for the fall play, but we finished our final performance last night. The next month should provide a lull before the winter play starts getting crazy, and I'll be able to post more frequently. But for now, let's talk! What's a character death you'll never get over? What are your favorite chilling reads? And if you celebrate it, what are you planning to do for Halloween this year? Comment below, and have a lovely day.
